Incorporating Wider Catchment Management Principles into Local Flood Management Planning – The Ipswich Integrated Catchment Action Plan
Research has shown that landuse type and vegetation cover has an impact on catchment hydrology and therefore flood behaviour however landscape management is not yet a regular fixture in the arsenal of flood risk managers. Natural flood risk management techniques are becoming common place in the UK and Europe where it can have multiple benefits however many questions remain around its application in Australia. Will it work here? Will it stack up from an economic perspective? Should it need to? Ipswich City Council is following the lead of the Brisbane River Flood Study in looking at answering some of these questions, looking options and building it in to future FRM analysis and looking towards some truly integrated catchment management outcomes.
